Yes, you can get SNAP while on SSI, and many SSI recipients get a meaningful amount because SNAP treats them as disabled or elderly. SSI counts as income, but you skip SNAP’s gross income test, can deduct medical costs over $35 a month, and have no cap on the shelter deduction. If everyone in your household gets SSI, you’re automatically treated as meeting SNAP’s income and asset tests. You can even start your SNAP application at a Social Security office.
In 2026 the federal SSI payment is $994 a month for one person and $1,491 for a couple, after a 2.8% cost-of-living increase in January.
How SSI and SNAP work together
| Rule | What it means for SSI recipients |
|---|---|
| SSI counts as income | Yes, as unearned income |
| Gross income test | Skipped (SSI makes you “disabled” or you’re 60+) |
| Everyone in the household on SSI | Automatically meets income and asset tests |
| Resources of SSI recipients | Not counted by SNAP |
| Medical deduction | Costs over $35 a month |
| Shelter deduction | No cap |
| Approval length | Up to 24 months (36 in CAP states) |
Worked example
Ms. Lee, 45, gets $994 in SSI, lives alone and pays $600 rent. Her state’s utility allowance is $400 (it varies). FY2027 figures, starting October 1, 2026:
| Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Income | SSI | $994 |
| Standard deduction | $994 – $217 | $777 |
| Shelter costs | $600 + $400 | $1,000 |
| Excess shelter (no cap) | $1,000 – half of $777 ($388.50) | $611.50 |
| Net income | $777 – $611.50 | $165.50 |
| Benefit | $306 – 30% of net (about $50) | About $256 a month |
If she has out-of-pocket medical costs, say $85 a month, another $50 comes off her income. That also raises her shelter deduction, so her benefit goes up about $22, to roughly $278. See SNAP benefit amounts for the formula.
Applying through Social Security
If everyone in your household is applying for or getting SSI, a Social Security office can help you fill out the SNAP application, often during your SSI interview. SSA sends it to your state SNAP agency.
Combined Application Projects (CAP)
In 17 states, a Combined Application Project makes SNAP simpler for people who get SSI and live alone: a short form, no separate SNAP interview in standard CAPs, no reporting, and a 36-month approval.
| Type | States |
|---|---|
| Standard CAP | Florida, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington |
| Modified CAP | Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia |
This list comes from USDA’s State Options Report (June 2024). USDA isn’t approving new CAPs, and Social Security’s own manual shows a slightly different count, so ask your state if you’re unsure.
California: SSI recipients can now get CalFresh
For decades, California gave SSI recipients extra cash instead of food stamps (the “cash-out”). That ended on June 1, 2019. SSI and SSP recipients in California can now get CalFresh like anyone else.
SSI households that include others
If only some members get SSI, the household isn’t automatically eligible and must pass the regular tests. The SSI member still counts as disabled, so the household gets the special senior and disability rules. Who has to apply together is explained in SNAP household rules.
Work rules
SSI recipients are generally treated as unable to work, so they’re exempt from SNAP’s work time limit. If you’re waiting on an SSI decision, tell your caseworker; a doctor’s statement can also exempt you. See SNAP work requirements.
Tips
- Report Medicare premiums and prescription costs; they’re easy to forget.
- If your SSI changes (for example the January cost-of-living increase), SNAP adjusts automatically in many states, but check your notice.
- SSI and SNAP both qualify you for Lifeline, a discounted or free government phone plan.
Quick answers
Will SNAP lower my SSI? No. SNAP benefits don’t count as income for SSI.
Does SSDI work the same way? Mostly. SSDI also makes you “disabled” for SNAP, so the special deductions apply. But the automatic income-and-asset pass is for SSI and TANF, not SSDI.
I get SSI and live with my adult son who buys his own food. Are we one household? Not if he’s 22 or older and you buy and cook separately. You can apply on your own.
Can Social Security file my SNAP renewal? Renewals go through your state SNAP agency, or are automatic in some CAP states. Watch for your renewal notice; see SNAP recertification.
