Lifeline iPhone Prices by Provider 2026

Here is every iPhone a Lifeline company listed on September 21, 2026, what it cost, and whether it was in stock that day. The cheapest iPhone anyone could actually buy was the iPhone SE 2nd generation at $19.99 from AirTalk Wireless. Nothing newer than an iPhone 13 was in stock at any of the three shops.

These Lifeline iPhone prices come from three catalogues: AirTalk Wireless’s own device pages, the SafeLink authorized e-retailer shop run by Quality One Wireless, and the TruConnect shop. Every row below was read on September 21, 2026. Rows that could not be confirmed that day were dropped, including an iPhone 13 Pro Max price and every iPhone XR listing.

One thing to settle first. Lifeline pays for phone service. It does not pay for a handset. Any price you see below is money out of your own pocket, on top of a free or near-free monthly plan.

Model by model, the older phones have their own guides: the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the iPhone XR, the iPhone X and XS and the iPhone 6 and 6s.

Two findings jump out of that table. First, the SafeLink and TruConnect shops carry almost the same Apple range at the same prices, because both storefronts are run by the same wholesaler; the iPhone XR at $249.00 is the one model TruConnect sells and SafeLink does not. Second, AirTalk is where the cheap iPhones live, and it is also where most of them are out of stock.

How to read Lifeline iPhone prices before you trust them

A price on a Lifeline shop is not a national price. Four things move it.

Your ZIP code and state. AirTalk says plainly that offers vary by state and asks for a ZIP before it shows a device. SafeLink builds its whole new-customer offer from the ZIP you type on its home page. The number you see may not be the number in this table.

Stock, week by week. On September 21, 2026, AirTalk’s free-phone page had exactly two devices in stock, and neither was an iPhone. Its paid catalogue had seven iPhones in stock out of the 25 Apple models it lists. That ratio changes constantly.

A $0 badge on one page can be a copay on another. The clearest example is the iPhone 11. Its AirTalk product page showed $0 against a struck-through $228.85 with an “Almost Gone” badge. The same phone on AirTalk’s upgrade listing showed “Our Price: $89.99.” Same phone, same day, two numbers. Which one you get depends on your ZIP, your state and whether you are a new customer or an existing one.

“From $249” is the cheapest version only. The SafeLink and TruConnect listings price by storage and condition. The iPhone SE 3rd generation starts at $249 for the base configuration and runs to $479. The iPhone 11 runs $279 to $299 at TruConnect. Pick 256GB or “New” instead of “Pre-Owned” and the total climbs.

Most of these phones are refurbished. The SafeLink shop labels its iPhone 13 as R2 grade, tested for key functions, and both shops offer a “Pre-Owned” condition next to “New” on most Apple listings.

Why nothing newer than an iPhone 13 is in stock

government iphone stock

AirTalk does list an iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, an iPhone 15 and an iPhone 15 Plus. All four were out of stock on September 21, 2026, and their prices were $249.99, $539.99, $514.99 and $599.99. The SafeLink and TruConnect shops stop at the iPhone 13 and do not list a 14 or 15 at all.

The reason is arithmetic, not policy. The federal Lifeline benefit is up to $9.25 a month toward service, $5.25 for voice-only, and up to $34.25 a month on Tribal lands. None of it is earmarked for a handset. So a provider that hands you a phone is paying for it out of its own margin on a service it already gives away, which is why the free shelf is stocked with Unimax and Hotpepper handsets rather than Apple ones.

That leaves refurbished supply as the only cheap source, and refurbished supply lags retail by three to four years. An iPhone 14 or 15 in good condition still sells near its trade-in value, so a Lifeline shop that lists one has to price it close to what a used-phone site charges. At $514.99 for an iPhone 15, the Lifeline connection is doing nothing for you. Our iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Max guide and iPhone 14 guide go through those two models in detail.

The cheapest route to each iPhone generation

Strip out the out-of-stock rows and the Lifeline iPhone prices that matter come down to this short list.

Two of those rows are the whole story for most readers. The iPhone SE 2nd generation at $19.99 and the iPhone SE 3rd generation at $49.99 are the only current-software iPhones under $100 on any Lifeline shop. Both still run Apple’s newest release. See our iPhone 11 guide, iPhone 12 guide and iPhone 13 guide if you are set on one of those three.

iPhone or Android at the same price

cheapest iphone lifeline

The same shops sell Android phones. Comparing them at the same dollar figure is the fastest way to judge whether an iPhone is worth it.

PriceiPhone you can getAndroid you can getWhich is the better buy
Under $50iPhone SE 2 $19.99 or SE 3 $49.99 (AirTalk)Galaxy A42 5G $19.99, Galaxy A03s $39.99 (AirTalk)The SE, because it still gets Apple’s newest iOS

The deciding fact is software. Apple’s compatibility list for iOS 27 covers the iPhone 11 and later plus the iPhone SE 2nd generation and later. The iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, X and XS on AirTalk’s cheap shelf are all below that line and were already left out of iOS 26. A $19.99 iPhone 8 is a phone that will never get another Apple security release. A $19.99 iPhone SE 2 is a phone that runs the current iOS. Same price, very different lifespan.

What the Lifeline benefit pays for

Lifeline is a federal discount on phone or internet service. It is worth up to $9.25 a month for internet or a bundle, $5.25 a month for voice-only service, and up to $34.25 a month for households on Tribal lands. Most providers stack their own offer on top so the monthly bill comes out at $0.

There is no federal line item for a handset. That is why a free government iPhone is not something any of these companies promises in writing, and why the phone question and the service question are answered on different pages of every provider’s site. Our general guide to the free government iPhone covers the promise side of it. To get the service itself, start with how to apply for Lifeline and check the Lifeline eligibility requirements first.

If you already own an iPhone, skip the shop. Bringing your own phone is free or nearly free: SafeLink’s shop sells a BYOP SIM card for $9.99, and TruConnect and AirTalk both support bring-your-own-device with a free SIM or eSIM. See bring your own phone to Lifeline for the compatibility checks.

Locked phones and unlocking, provider by provider

This decides whether the phone survives a switch, so read it before you pay.

ProviderAre its phones locked?Policy as publishedHow to ask
AirTalk WirelessYes“AirTalk Wireless does not provide unlocking services for any Devices obtained through our Service”No route published
TruConnectYesDevice must be active at least 365 days after activation, account in good standing, not reported lost or stolenCall 800-430-0443 or email [email protected]; processed within two business days
SafeLinkDepends on the phoneFCC’s consumer guide for the TracFone brands, SafeLink included, says 12 months of service on the devicetfwunlockpolicy.com or 1-888-442-5102

One detail worth money: some phones in the SafeLink and TruConnect shops are sold unlocked already. The iPhone 11 listing at SafeLink shows “Locked: No,” and the TruConnect iPhone 13 listing shows the same. The iPhone SE 3rd generation at both shops shows “Locked: Yes.” Check that line on the product page before you buy. Our guide to unlocking a free government phone explains what changes after you switch.

TruConnect adds a warning that matters if you ever get a code: you have five attempts, and a sixth wrong entry locks the SIM slot permanently.

A short checklist before you pay

  1. Enter your own ZIP first. The price in any table, including this one, is a starting point.
  2. Check the “Locked” line on the product page, not the marketing page.
  3. Check the condition dropdown. “Pre-Owned” and “New” are different prices for the same model.
  4. Check the iOS line. If the model is older than an iPhone 11 or an SE 2nd generation, it will not run iOS 27.
  5. Compare against the Android at the same price on the same shop.
  6. Count the restocking fee into your decision. A $279 phone you return costs about $65 to send back.
  7. Never pay a “shipping fee” or “activation fee” to release a free phone, and never give an EBT PIN or a Social Security number to a site that is not the provider’s own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest iPhone on Lifeline right now? The iPhone SE 2nd generation at $19.99 from AirTalk Wireless, as listed on September 21, 2026, with an “Almost Gone” badge. The iPhone 7 Plus was the same price. The SE is the better buy because it still runs current iOS.

Does anyone give away a free iPhone? AirTalk lists the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus and 7 at $0, and all four were out of stock on September 21, 2026. Its iPhone 11 product page showed $0 in some ZIP codes. SafeLink and TruConnect name no free iPhone model anywhere. Treat a free iPhone as possible but never promised.

Why does the same phone cost $0 on one page and $89.99 on another? Because the offer is built from your ZIP code, your state and whether you are new or an existing customer. AirTalk’s iPhone 11 showed both numbers on the same day.

Do these prices include the monthly plan? No. The plan is separate and is free or near-free for approved Lifeline customers. The phone price is a one-time charge you pay yourself.

Can I use an iPhone I already own? Usually yes, and it is the cheapest route. A SafeLink BYOP SIM card is $9.99, and AirTalk and TruConnect both offer a free SIM or eSIM for compatible phones.

Are these phones new or used? Mostly refurbished. Both shops offer a “New” or “Pre-Owned” choice on Apple models and label refurbished stock as tested for key functions. AirTalk says every device it provides is brand new or a carefully refurbished model.

Which provider stocks the most iPhones? AirTalk, by a wide margin. It lists 25 Apple models against four at each of the other two shops. Read our pages on AirTalk’s free iPhone offer, SafeLink free phones and the TruConnect free phone for what each one actually ships.

Will these Lifeline iPhone prices be the same next month? No. Stock turned over enough between readings that a model in stock one week was gone the next. Check the date on any price table you read, including this one.
