No Lifeline company gives away an iPhone 12. The closest thing in September 2026 is AirTalk Wireless, which lists the phone at $139.99 against a $247.25 retail price, and its own product page showed it out of stock on September 21, 2026. SafeLink’s authorized shop lists the same model at $349, and TruConnect’s shop lists it at $349 as well.
So a free government iPhone 12 is really a copay iPhone, and the cheapest one is often sold out. What makes it worth a look anyway is the thing it was built for. The iPhone 12 was Apple’s first 5G iPhone, announced October 13, 2020, and it is still the least expensive 5G iPhone on any Lifeline shop. Whether that 5G is worth $139.99 depends on something most articles skip: whether your plan uses 5G at all.
What a free government iPhone 12 really costs
These are the prices and stock states on the providers’ public pages on September 21, 2026, with no ZIP code entered. AirTalk says offers “vary by state,” so your own ZIP may show something different.
| Model | AirTalk Wireless | SafeLink authorized shop | TruConnect shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12 | $139.99 (retail $247.25), out of stock | $349 | $349 |
| iPhone 12 mini | $139.99 (retail $200), out of stock | Not listed | Not listed |
| iPhone 12 Pro | $273.99 (retail $343.85), out of stock | Not listed | Not listed |
| iPhone 12 Pro Max | $159.99 (retail $420), out of stock | Not listed | Not listed |
Two things jump out. Every iPhone 12 variant on AirTalk was out of stock that day, including the free government iPhone 12 Pro Max that a lot of people search for. And the gap between shops is huge, because AirTalk sells refurbished stock at refurbished prices while the SafeLink and TruConnect shops sell at $349.
AirTalk says the quiet part itself. Its guide to the model reads: “Although some may, it’s hard to find a completely free iPhone 12 as it still belongs to the line of premium Apple phones.” Compare that with the iPhone 11, which does show $0 on AirTalk’s product page in some ZIP codes. Our AirTalk free iPhone guide covers which models hit zero, and our Lifeline iPhone price list has every model by provider.
Does your Lifeline plan even use 5G?
Buying a 5G phone does nothing if the plan behind it is a 4G plan. Check this before you spend $139.99.
AirTalk’s network policy refers to “our Network Supplier’s 4G LTE and 5G+ networks,” and its California plan page lists 12 GB “on 5G+,” so 5G is part of the service there. SafeLink runs on Verizon, which agreed when it bought TracFone to keep offering “cost-effective” 5G to Lifeline participants. TruConnect’s California page still describes “at least 8 GB of 4G/LTE data,” and that page predates the end of the ACP, so ask before you buy.
Now the part that matters more than the network logo. A Lifeline plan is a small data plan. Federal minimum service standards run through November 2027 at 4.5 GB of mobile broadband per month, and AirTalk includes 5 GB automatically with up to 15 GB in some states. Once you pass that, providers slow you down. 5G does not raise the cap. It empties the bucket faster, because faster speeds pull higher quality video and bigger downloads without you noticing.
Hotspot is the other half. Federal rules require at least 75% of a Lifeline provider’s offered devices to be hotspot capable, so the hardware is usually fine. The data is not free. AirTalk lists “5G Speed Hotspot” on its California plans as available “with charges,” and TruConnect sells hotspot top-ups. Our guide to Lifeline plans with hotspot data has the details by provider.
The honest summary: on a 5 GB plan, 5G buys a faster first few gigabytes each month. That is worth something if you make video calls or download large files. It is not worth $139.99 if you get throttled on day 10 anyway.
The cheapest 5G phone on each Lifeline shop
An iPhone 12 at $139.99 competes with new Androids at a similar price. Here is what the shops listed on September 21, 2026.
| Device | Price | Where listed | New or used | 5G |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BYOP SIM kit (use your own phone) | $9.99 | SafeLink shop | N/A | Depends on your phone |
| Samsung Galaxy A42 5G | $19.99 | AirTalk upgrade listing | Refurbished | Yes |
| Samsung Galaxy A32 5G | $59.99 | AirTalk upgrade listing | Refurbished | Yes |
| Samsung Galaxy S21 5G | $79.99 | AirTalk upgrade listing | Refurbished | Yes |
| Motorola G Play (2024) | $129 | SafeLink and TruConnect shops | New | Not labeled 5G |
| Apple iPhone 12 | $139.99 | AirTalk (out of stock) | Refurbished | Yes |
| Samsung Galaxy A14 5G | $149 | SafeLink and TruConnect shops | New | Yes |
| Motorola G Power 5G (2024) | $179 | SafeLink and TruConnect shops | New | Yes |
| Samsung Galaxy A15 5G | $199 | SafeLink and TruConnect shops | New | Yes |
Take the Android when you want a warranty and a fresh battery. A new phone from the TruConnect shop carries a one-year manufacturer warranty, a refurbished one gets 60 days, and AirTalk’s warranty on a paid pre-owned device is 30 days. A $149 Galaxy A14 5G is new and costs $9 more than a used iPhone 12 that is five years into its battery life.
Take the iPhone 12 when you already live in Apple’s world. If your family uses iMessage and FaceTime, or you know iOS and do not want to learn Android, the $139.99 buys something the Galaxy cannot. The iPhone 12 also still gets current software, which cheap Androids often do not.
And take the $19.99 Galaxy A42 5G seriously if money is tight. It is 5G, it costs a seventh of the iPhone, and on a 5 GB plan you will struggle to tell the difference day to day.
A 2020 iPhone in 2026: updates, battery, and the missing charger
Software is the good news. iOS 27 came out on September 14, 2026 and runs on the same phones as iOS 26, meaning iPhone 11 and newer. The iPhone 12 is on that list, so a used one still gets Apple’s current release and its security fixes. Apple’s newer AI features need an iPhone 15 Pro or later, so you get the updates without the headline features.
Battery is the real cost. Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier batteries to hold 80% of original capacity at 500 full charge cycles. A phone from 2020 has usually passed that, so expect a used iPhone 12 to need a mid-day top up. Apple’s out-of-warranty battery service for the iPhone X through iPhone 13 has been $89 since a price change on March 1, 2023, and Apple’s current repair page quotes a price only after inspecting the phone. Do the math before you buy: $139.99 plus $89 is $229, which is more than a new Galaxy A15 5G.
Two more things people get wrong. There is no power adapter and no EarPods in the box, because the iPhone 12 was the first generation Apple shipped that way. You get a USB-C to Lightning cable, so you need a USB-C charger, and the phone port is Lightning, not USB-C. On the plus side, this model introduced MagSafe, so it charges wirelessly at up to 15 watts and takes magnetic cases, wallets and stands that are cheap now. It also supports a nano-SIM and an eSIM, which makes switching providers simpler.
The Lifeline plan behind the phone
Lifeline is the federal discount behind what people call the Obama phone. It pays up to $9.25 a month toward internet or bundled service, up to $5.25 for voice only, and up to $34.25 on Tribal lands. Providers turn that into a $0 plan with unlimited talk and text plus a few gigabytes of data.
You qualify on income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, which in 2026 is $21,546 for one person and $44,550 for a household of four, or automatically through SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or a Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension. One benefit per household. Details are in our Lifeline eligibility guide.
How to get an iPhone 12, step by step
- Check the shop pages with your ZIP code. Prices and stock change by state, and a sold-out listing today may return next month.
- Get approved through the National Verifier at getinternet.gov, or apply through the provider, which files for you. Our Lifeline application guide covers documents and timing.
- Pick the provider that stocks it: AirTalk for the refurbished unit, the SafeLink phone shop for the $349 one.
- Pay the copay. Lifeline covers service, not devices.
- Activate, then use the service at least once every 30 days or you get dropped.
The cheaper path is bringing your own. If you already have an iPhone 12, or find one cheap on a resale site, a SafeLink BYOP SIM kit was $9.99 in September 2026. AirTalk’s BYOD checker wants a phone that is GSM compatible and not locked to another carrier. That last word is where people get caught. A used iPhone 12 still locked to Verizon or AT&T will not work, and AirTalk does not unlock devices it did not sell you. Our bring your own phone guide shows how to check lock status first.
Fake free iPhone 12 offers
Apple stopped selling the iPhone 12 on September 12, 2023. No carrier gives away a phone it cannot buy new, so an ad promising a brand-new free iPhone 12 in 2026 is selling something else.
Watch for these:
- Sites promising an iPhone 12 with “no verification.” Real Lifeline enrollment always checks identity and eligibility against federal records.
- Anyone asking for your EBT PIN, full card number, or a payment to “release” a free phone.
- “Free iPhone 12 when you switch” carrier deals. Those are trade-in promotions paid as bill credits over two or three years on a premium plan, not a government program.
- Giveaways that ask you to pay shipping. Real providers ship devices free.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a free iPhone 12 from the government? No. Lifeline pays for service, not for phones. The iPhone 12 is sold with a copay at every provider that lists it, from $139.99 at AirTalk to $349 at the SafeLink and TruConnect shops in September 2026.
How do I get a free iPhone 12 if no provider gives one away? The two real routes are a refurbished unit with a copay, or buying a used one yourself and bringing it in with a $9.99 SIM kit. Both leave you paying for the phone.
Where can I get a free iPhone 12 Pro Max? Nowhere as a giveaway. AirTalk listed it at $159.99 on September 21, 2026, out of stock, and priced below the regular iPhone 12 Pro at $273.99. These listings move a lot.
Is the iPhone 12 still worth it in 2026? For software, yes. It runs iOS 27, released September 14, 2026. For battery, be careful. A 2020 phone has likely passed the 500 cycle mark where Apple expects capacity to drop to 80%, and Apple battery service for this model has been $89 since 2023.
Is an iPhone 12 better than a $149 Android? Only if you want iOS. The $149 Galaxy A14 5G is new, has 5G, and carries a one-year manufacturer warranty. The $139.99 iPhone 12 is refurbished with a 30 day AirTalk warranty.
Does 5G cost extra on a free government phone? The 5G network access does not cost extra where it is offered, but the data allowance is the same small bucket. Hotspot data is often billed separately, like AirTalk’s “5G Speed Hotspot” on its California plans.
Can I unlock a Lifeline iPhone 12 and take it elsewhere? Not quickly. AirTalk says it does not unlock any device obtained through its service. TruConnect unlocks a device it provided after 365 days of activation if the account is in good standing.
