Access Wireless phones arrive with the SIM card already installed, so activation is usually just a matter of following the instructions in the box. If that does not work, call 1-866-594-3644, or dial 611 from an Access Wireless phone. Access Wireless also asks you to activate within 30 days of receiving your phone.
This guide covers activating a new Access Wireless phone, activating a phone you bring, and fixing a phone that will not connect. For the company overview, see our Access Wireless review. For activation at other free government phone companies, see how to activate a free government phone.
Activate your free Access Wireless phone
- Charge the phone. The SIM is already inside.
- Power it on.
- Follow the activation instructions inside the packaging.
- If activation does not start or fails, call 1-866-594-3644 from another phone.
- Make a test call and send a text.
Do this within 30 days of getting the phone, and keep using it at least once every 30 days after that; see the Lifeline 30-day usage rule.
Activate a phone you bring
- Check that the phone is compatible and unlocked; see Access Wireless bring your own phone.
- Insert your Access Wireless SIM.
- Dial 611 from the phone, or call 1-866-594-3644 from another phone, to activate it on your account.
- Test calls, texts and data.
If your phone will not connect
Access Wireless’s support page gives manual network reset steps. In general:
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| No service after activation | Restart the phone; turn airplane mode on and off |
| Calls work but no data | Reset network settings (Settings, then System or General, then Reset network settings), then restart |
| SIM not recognized | Power off, remove and reinsert the SIM, power on |
| Weak signal at home | Check the coverage map on Access Wireless’s site |
| Still not working | Call 1-866-594-3644; see Access Wireless customer service |
For problems that start later, such as a line that stops working after months, see free government phone not working.
California customers
California LifeLine customers follow the same activation steps, but the sign-up and activation fee rules differ; see Access Wireless California LifeLine.
