Georgia’s SNAP is run by the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Apply online at gateway.ga.gov (open Monday to Friday, 5 a.m. to midnight), call 877-423-4746, mail your application, or visit a local DFCS office. Georgia uses the federal 130% of poverty gross income limit, $3,575 a month for a family of four from October 1, 2026, and has no asset test. A phone interview is required.
Georgia has one of the highest SNAP payment error rates in the country, 15.21% in fiscal 2025, so expect careful document checks. About 1.2 million Georgians got SNAP in June 2026. Many people still call it “food stamps,” and Georgia.gov uses both names.

Georgia income limits from October 1, 2026
| Household size | Gross monthly limit (130%) | Net limit (100%) | Maximum benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,729 | $1,330 | $306 |
| 2 | $2,345 | $1,804 | $562 |

| 7 | $5,421 | $4,170 | $1,616 |
| 8 | $6,037 | $4,644 | $1,841 |
These are USDA’s official figures for the 48 states. Many neighboring states use higher limits (North Carolina, for example, uses 200%), so a family that’s over the limit in Georgia might qualify elsewhere. Households with someone 60+ or disabled only need to pass the net test; see SNAP for seniors.
Documents Georgia asks for
Georgia.gov lists what DFCS needs to see. Gather what you can before you apply:
- Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or state ID
- Date of birth and Social Security number for each person applying
- Citizenship or immigration status
- Employment status and income, such as pay stubs or child support you receive
- Household expenses, such as utility bills, medical bills and child care receipts
- Criminal background, if any (for example, probation, parole or a felony conviction)
You don’t need every paper to file. DFCS counts your application as filed once it has the head of household’s name, address, date and signature. After the interview, you have up to 10 days to send anything the worker still needs.
How to apply in Georgia
- Online at Georgia Gateway. Create an account, apply, and upload documents.
- Phone 877-423-4746.
- Mail to the Atlanta address above, or in person at a DFCS office (find it on the DFCS locations page).
- Phone interview with a DFCS eligibility worker. Keep your phone on; see SNAP interview tips.
- Decision within 30 days, or 7 days if you qualify for expedited SNAP.
Senior SNAP for Georgians 60 and older
Georgia has a shorter path for older adults. You can use the Senior SNAP application (Form 298) if everyone in the home is 60 or older, buys and cooks food together, isn’t working, and lives on permanent fixed income like Social Security, a pension, VA benefits or Railroad Retirement. You still do a phone interview. Mail Form 298 to Georgia Senior SNAP, P.O. Box 450149, Atlanta, GA 31145-0149, or fax it to 678-717-5585.
How much Georgia SNAP pays: an example
Your benefit is the maximum for your household size minus 30% of your net income. Here’s a single mom in Macon with two children, using the federal figures that start October 1, 2026:
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross pay from her job | $2,000 |
| Minus 20% earned income deduction ($400) | $1,600 |
| Minus standard deduction for 3 people ($217) | $1,383 |
| Shelter costs (rent plus utilities as counted by DFCS) | $1,300 |
| Excess shelter: $1,300 minus half of $1,383 ($691.50) | $608.50 |
| Net income: $1,383 minus $608.50 | $774.50 |
| 30% of net income, rounded up | $233 |
| Monthly SNAP: $808 maximum minus $233 | $575 |
Her gross pay ($2,000) is under Georgia’s $2,960 limit for three, and her net income is under $2,277, so she passes both tests. If she paid for child care, that cost would come off too and raise her benefit. Your own numbers will differ; see SNAP benefit amounts for the full rules.
When your benefits load
Georgia loads benefits every other day between the 5th and 23rd, based on the last two digits of your Client ID:
| Last 2 digits | Deposit day |
|---|---|
| 00 to 09 | 5th |
| 10 to 19 | 7th |
| 20 to 29 | 9th |
| 30 to 39 | 11th |
| 40 to 49 | 13th |
| 50 to 59 | 15th |
| 60 to 69 | 17th |
| 70 to 79 | 19th |
| 80 to 89 | 21st |
| 90 to 99 | 23rd |
Check your balance and lock your card in the ConnectEBT app. Card locking matters: federal replacement of stolen SNAP ended in December 2024. See stolen SNAP benefits and the EBT deposit schedule for every state.
How to renew SNAP in Georgia
At the end of each certification period you must renew, and DFCS mails a renewal letter by the 20th of the month before your benefits are set to end. Renewals that arrive by the 15th of the last month are usually on time. You can still send one later, but a late renewal can interrupt your benefits.
Ways to renew:
- Georgia Gateway: log in, complete the renewal and upload proof.
- Mail: send the completed renewal form (Form 508) to any DFCS office.
- In person: bring Form 508 to a DFCS office during business hours.
DFCS can take up to 30 days to process a renewal. It asks for the same kinds of proof as a new application, so send current pay stubs and bills. More tips: SNAP recertification.
Periodic reports are being phased out
Georgia used to send many households a mid-period form called a periodic report (Form 528). DFCS began phasing it out in March 2026. Once your household completes a renewal on or after March 2, 2026, you no longer have to send periodic reports. If you haven’t renewed since then, keep filing them until your next renewal, online in Gateway or on paper. DFCS closes cases when a required report or proof isn’t returned, and you’d have to reapply.
Work rules and SNAP Works
Georgia began applying the expanded federal time limit on November 1, 2025: adults 18 to 64 without a child under 14 at home need 80 hours a month of work, volunteering or training, or they’re limited to 3 months of SNAP in 3 years. Georgia’s training program is SNAP Works, which can count toward those hours. See SNAP work requirements and SNAP Employment and Training.
SNAP Works is voluntary. It offers short-term job training in fields like health care, manufacturing, IT and welding, plus job search help, adult basic education and English classes. It can help pay for transportation, required textbooks, uniforms and tools. Call 877-423-4746 to ask about joining.
No Summer EBT in Georgia
Georgia didn’t take part in Summer EBT (SUN Bucks) in 2026, so families didn’t get the $120 per child that 39 other states and DC offered. Free summer meal sites still operate. See Summer EBT.
What you can buy
Georgia has no approved soda or candy restriction as of September 2026. Grocery trade groups list Georgia as a state that may request one, so check the states list for updates.
For now, the federal rules apply. Your EBT card buys fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and poultry, dairy, bread and cereal, snack foods, non-alcoholic drinks, and seeds and plants that grow food. It can’t buy alcohol, tobacco, vitamins or medicine, pet food, paper goods, soap, or food that’s hot when you buy it. Georgia isn’t in the Restaurant Meals Program, so SNAP can’t pay for restaurant meals here.
Other help for Georgia SNAP households
- WIC: Georgia’s Department of Public Health runs WIC for pregnant women, new moms, babies and children under 5. Being on SNAP may mean you already meet WIC’s income rule. Apply through Georgia Gateway or your local health department; participant line 800-228-9173. See WIC vs SNAP.
- TANF: DFCS also runs TANF cash help for families with children, and you can apply for it through Georgia Gateway. See SNAP vs TANF.
- Free phone with food stamps in Georgia: SNAP automatically qualifies your household for Lifeline, which takes up to $9.25 a month off phone or internet service, and many providers offer free phones in Georgia with that discount. See how to apply for Lifeline.
Georgia’s error rate: why it matters to you
Georgia’s 15.21% payment error rate means more than 1 in 7 SNAP dollars was paid in the wrong amount (mostly too much). Under the 2025 law, states with error rates of 10% or more will eventually pay 15% of benefit costs. News reports say Georgia may qualify for a delay to fiscal 2029, and the new state budget includes $6.9 million to reduce errors with more training and case reviews.
For you, this means:
- Send every document the state asks for, by the deadline.
- Report changes on time; see SNAP reporting changes.
- Keep copies. If you get an overpayment letter, see SNAP overpayment claims.
During the 2025 shutdown
DFCS first warned that November 2025 benefits wouldn’t be available. Partial payments went out, and households that got partial benefits by November 8 received the rest by November 18.
