Free Government iPhone 11: How to Get It

A free government iPhone 11 is real, but it comes from one company and it moves. On September 21, 2026, AirTalk Wireless showed it at $0 with an “Almost Gone” badge on its own product page, and $89.99 for the same phone on its upgrade listing. Same day, two prices. Which one you see depends on your ZIP code, your state, whether you are a new customer, and what is left in the warehouse.

Nobody else gave it away. SafeLink’s authorized shop priced it at $279 and showed it out of stock, TruConnect listed it from $279, and Assurance Wireless does not list one. A free iphone 11 government phone exists, but it is not something to count on.

Prices below were read that day with no ZIP entered. Yours may differ.

The SafeLink shop is not run by SafeLink: “Quality One Wireless independently operates this site and is a SafeLink Wireless Authorized E-Retailer.” TruConnect’s price is a range set by storage and condition. None of the four listed an iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max at any price, so a free iphone 11 pro max, or a free government iphone 11 pro max, has no Lifeline answer right now.

Why the same phone had two prices on one site

AirTalk runs three separate shelves, and the iPhone 11 sits on two of them.

  • The Free Phones page. Genuinely $0 models, “available for new and eligible former customers only.” That day it held two Apple phones, the iPhone 7 and the 6 Plus, both “Out of Stock.”
  • The new-enrollment offers. Devices tied to a fresh sign-up, priced from your state and local stock. This is where the $0 iPhone 11 lives.
  • The upgrade listing. Discounted devices for people who already have AirTalk. That is the $89.99.

AirTalk’s own wording is the rule: “Offers vary by state and is available for a limited time. Enter your ZIP code to check availability in your area.” Its iPhone 11 article says availability depends on “eligibility, location, and current inventory,” and that “there is no guarantee every approved applicant will receive an iPhone 11 specifically.” Our AirTalk Wireless free iPhone guide lists every model.

How to land the $0 version, step by step

how to get a free iphone 11

The order matters. You pick a device inside the application, not after.

  1. Check that you qualify. Income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or someone in the household gets SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or a Veterans or Survivors Pension. Our Lifeline eligibility guide has the income table.
  2. Run your ZIP before filling anything out. It sets which devices and prices you see. Read the price on the iPhone 11 tile, not the headline: $0 is your offer, $89.99 means the free version is not available where you live.
  3. Have three documents ready. Proof of identity, address and program participation. Photos are fine. Missing documents are the usual reason an application stalls.
  4. Pick the iPhone 11 during enrollment. No later screen swaps a cheap Android for an iPhone at no cost.
  5. If a copay appears, decide before you submit. $89.99 for a locked refurbished iPhone 11 is a real choice, not a scam. Compare it to an unlocked unit first.
  6. Watch the clock, then inspect it. AirTalk reviews most applications in 1 to 2 business days, complex ones in 3 to 4, then ships in 3 to 7, plus 7 to 10 for delivery. A free pre-owned device carries a 15-day warranty window, so test calls and both cameras the week it lands.

Nobody legitimate asks for a card number, a fee or your EBT PIN to send a Lifeline phone. Our free government phone scams guide covers the rest.

If it sells out before you are approved

Approval and inventory are separate systems. You can be approved and still be told the phone is gone. AirTalk says “device availability is not guaranteed” and that models “can change based on stock.” The “Almost Gone” badge was already up on September 21, 2026.

Your options, worst to best:

  • Take whatever $0 model is offered. That day the only in-stock free phones were an A67L Gen2 and a Hotpepper Verde. Basic Android, but the service is free.
  • Take a SIM and bring your own phone. The benefit is the service, not the handset, and nobody locks a phone you already own. See our bring your own phone to Lifeline guide.
  • Buy later, either the $89.99 upgrade or a refurbished unit of your own, while staying on the $0 plan.

Your benefit does not expire because you skipped the phone. Approval is the hard part, and it carries.

The iPhone 11 in 2026: still updated, still 4G

iphone 11 government phone

This is why the iPhone 11 is worth chasing and older free models are not.

SpeciPhone 11What it means on Lifeline
SoftwareiOS 27, released September 14, 2026Still updated; the iPhone 8 and X are not
CellularLTE only, no 5GFine for 5 to 15 GB of Lifeline data
HardwareA13 Bionic, 6.1-inch LCD, Lightning, eSIMRuns current apps; needs the older cable
Battery80% of capacity at 500 charge cyclesA 2019 phone is likely past that

Software is the argument for this model. iOS 27 shipped September 14, 2026 and supports the iPhone 11 series and newer. Nothing older made the list, so a free iPhone 8 or X sits on old software, which matters for banking apps and browser security. Apple Intelligence needs an iPhone 15 Pro, so you skip that, but you keep the security updates. That is the case for a copay on an 11 over a free 8.

Battery is the risk. The iPhone 11 went on sale September 20, 2019, so any unit is about seven years old, and AirTalk calls its devices “brand new or a carefully refurbished model.” Check Maximum Capacity the day it arrives. The 80s are usable. The 70s mean an afternoon charger. Apple’s out-of-warranty battery service for older iPhones was reported at $99 in September 2026, more than the copay.

No 5G, because the iPhone 11 came before it. AirTalk’s plan gives 5 GB of high-speed data, up to 15 GB by state, and LTE covers that.

Locked phones, and what that costs if you switch

AirTalk does not unlock. Not after a year, not ever. Its terms say it “does not provide unlocking services for any Devices obtained through our Service,” and its blog adds that devices “are locked to the AirTalk Wireless network.” That is the biggest catch on a $0 phone: Lifeline lets you change companies, and this handset stays behind.

ProviderUnlocking policy, as published
AirTalk WirelessNo unlocking of any device obtained through its service
TruConnectUnlocks after 365 days active, account in good standing; two business days
SafeLink WirelessPublishes an unlocking policy file, but it sits behind a bot challenge

TruConnect adds a warning worth copying: “You have only 5 attempts to unlock the device. If you enter an incorrect code 5 times, the SIM slot will be permanently locked.” Our guide to unlocking a free government phone explains where federal rules stop and carrier policy starts.

Buying a refurbished iPhone 11 as the backup plan

Most people end up here, and it is no defeat. Lifeline pays for service, never hardware, so bring your own iPhone 11 and the bill is still $0.

RouteWhat you payWhat you get
AirTalk $0 offer, if your ZIP shows it$0Refurbished, locked to AirTalk, 15-day warranty
AirTalk upgrade copay$89.99Refurbished, locked, 30-day warranty
SafeLink or TruConnect shop$279 to $299Third-party e-retailers; TruConnect gives refurbs 60 days
A seller you pick yourselfVariesUnlocked if you buy unlocked, on that seller’s returns

Read the return terms wherever you buy. A non-defective return at TruConnect’s shop costs a 20% restocking fee plus shipping.

How to check a used iPhone 11 before you pay

Five minutes of checking beats a refund fight. Do these with the phone in hand.

  1. Check the IMEI. Dial \*#06# to show it, then look it up on stolenphonechecker.org, the free CTIA service that reports whether a device was flagged lost or stolen.
  2. Confirm Activation Lock is off. Open Settings and tap the name at the top. If an Apple Account is still signed in, the seller must sign out and turn off Find My before money changes hands. An activation-locked iPhone is a brick.
  3. Read two screens. Settings, General, About shows the carrier lock line, where “No SIM restrictions” means unlocked. Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging shows Maximum Capacity.
  4. Install the latest update. If it cannot pull iOS 27, something is wrong.
  5. Test what fails. Both rear cameras, Face ID, the speaker, the microphone on a call, the Lightning port.

Buy where a return exists.

Ads that are not what they look like

Treat a page as marketing, not information, if it does any of these:

  • Calls the iPhone 11 free with no date, no ZIP warning and no word on stock.
  • Shows a countdown, “only 3 left,” or a claim form not on the provider’s domain.
  • Asks for a fee, a card number, a full Social Security number or an EBT PIN.
  • Promises a free iPhone 11 Pro Max, which no provider lists at any price.

Eligibility checks live on getinternet.gov. Offers live on the provider’s own site. See our free government iPhone guide, the SafeLink free phones page, the TruConnect free phone page and our how to apply for Lifeline guide.
