How to Apply for SafeLink Wireless

The short answer on how to apply for SafeLink Wireless: type your ZIP code on safelinkwireless.com and press START, or get approved first at getinternet.gov and then pick SafeLink as your company. Both end in the same place, because the federal government decides who qualifies, not the phone company.

Applying is free. You can also apply by phone at 1-800-723-3546 (1-800-SafeLink), the number Verizon publishes for SafeLink enrollment. SafeLink is the Lifeline brand of TracFone Wireless, which Verizon owns, and it runs on the Verizon network. For the company itself, read our SafeLink Wireless review.

Your ZIP code matters more than people expect. SafeLink’s home page says “Plans vary by state,” and both the offer and availability change with it. Official USAC payment data for mid 2026 shows SafeLink claiming Lifeline in 47 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, but not in Nebraska, Oregon or South Dakota.

That is also the answer to “SafeLink near me.” There are no SafeLink stores to walk into: the SafeLink Wireless sign up runs through the website and the phone line. To see every company serving your ZIP, use the Companies Near Me tool on lifelinesupport.org, or compare Lifeline providers.

What to have ready before you start

SafeLink’s home page warns California applicants not to begin without five things. It is a good checklist for everyone, because the federal application asks the same questions.

  • Your full legal name, as it appears on your ID and benefit letters.
  • Your address. A physical street address: SafeLink is reported not to ship phones to P.O. boxes, shelters or residential treatment facilities.
  • Your date of birth.
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number, not all nine. A Tribal ID works instead.
  • Your current service provider, if you have phone service now.

Two more save time: proof of how you qualify, photographed clearly, and an email address you check.

The ZIP code check

safelink zip code check

Find the ZIP box on the safelinkwireless.com home page and press START. A “See our offers in your area” button shows that ZIP’s offer without starting an application.

In September 2026 the headline offer is $0 unlimited talk and text plus data, advertised with three months of Amazon Prime, under the footnote “Plans vary by state. Limited time offer.” No data amount is printed, because it depends on your ZIP and the current promotion. Ignore any GB figure on a third-party site.

Step by step: the SafeLink Wireless application

Here is how to apply for SafeLink Wireless on the company’s own site, screen by screen.

  1. Enter your ZIP code and press START.
  2. Review the offer for your area, including the device options.
  3. Enter your details: name, address, date of birth, and last four Social Security digits or Tribal ID.
  4. Choose how you qualify, by program or by income.
  5. Wait for the automatic check. Your details go to the National Verifier, which checks identity and eligibility against government databases in seconds.
  6. Upload documents if asked. Photograph the letter with your phone right there.
  7. Sign and certify. You initial and sign yourself. An agent may not sign for you.
  8. Pick your device. Use a phone you own, or buy one. SafeLink publishes Keep Your Own Phone help pages.
  9. Confirm. A confirmation appears on screen and by email.

Step 5 is where people get stuck. The check is run by the Lifeline National Verifier, a federal system run by USAC. Phone companies cannot overrule it, so if it says no, nobody can enroll you until the record is fixed.

The other route: start at lifelinesupport.org, click Apply Now, and make an account at getinternet.gov. Fill in the same details and read the result. “Qualified” means go pick a company. Then enter your ZIP on safelinkwireless.com, and SafeLink looks up your approval instead of starting over. Our guide on how to apply for Lifeline covers that form screen by screen.

Proving you qualify

You qualify through a program or through income. Program is faster, because more databases are connected.

How you qualifyWhat countsProof if the database misses you
ProgramSNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans or Survivors PensionBenefit card with your name and a date, or an award letter from the last 12 months
IncomeAt or below 135% of the poverty guidelines: $21,546 a year for one person in 2026Tax return, three months of pay stubs, or a Social Security, VA or unemployment statement
TribalBIA General Assistance, Tribal TANF, FDPIR, income-qualified Head StartLetter from the Tribal program

Our guide to Lifeline eligibility requirements has the income table by household size, and Lifeline application documents shows what each one must display. On food stamps, a SNAP award letter is the simplest proof: see free phone with food stamps.

When the automatic check fails

This is normal, not a rejection. USAC has federal database links for Medicaid, public housing and VA benefits, plus state links in about half the states. In many states SNAP and SSI are not checked automatically, so people who clearly qualify still get asked for a letter.

The screen says which item failed and what proof it wants. Upload a clear photo with all four corners and the date readable. USAC says documents sent between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern are reviewed within minutes. Never mail originals, and never pay a “processing fee.” There is no such fee.

The 90-day window after approval

Get approved through the National Verifier and then do nothing, and the approval goes stale. USAC’s guidance to companies treats an eligibility decision over 90 days old as expired and tells providers to start a new one. So finish your SafeLink enrollment within 90 days of being found eligible. Miss it and you apply again from the beginning.

How long approval takes, and checking your status

safelink application status

SafeLink publishes no promised turnaround, so treat any “SafeLink approves in X days” claim on a third-party site with suspicion. The decision is often instant when the databases find you, and takes as long as document review when they do not.

Where to checkHowWhat it tells you
SafeLink’s home pageThe “Check your service status” link under Existing CustomerWhether SafeLink has enrolled you and service is live
SafeLink by phone1-800-723-3546 for enrollment, 1-800-378-1684 for tech supportWhere your enrollment sits and what is still needed
Lifeline Support Center1-800-234-9473, or log in at getinternet.govWhether the federal side approved you, and which document failed

Have your name, date of birth, address and last four Social Security digits ready when you call. If you applied at getinternet.gov, your application ID shortens the call. Our guide on checking your Lifeline application status explains each message. The home page also has “Verify your recertification status” and “Lost your Lifeline service? Come back to SafeLink!” links.

If you already have Lifeline elsewhere

Do not cancel first, and do not apply twice. Ask SafeLink to transfer your benefit. The transfer moves your one benefit across, and the old service ends when it completes. Our guide on how to transfer Lifeline to another provider covers the limits on switching.

Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household, meaning people who live together and share income and expenses. If someone at your address has Lifeline but your finances are separate, fill out the USAC Household Worksheet. Our explainer on the one-per-household rule covers roommates and shared addresses.

Tribal, California, Texas and Oregon

Tribal lands. The benefit is bigger: up to $34.25 a month instead of $9.25, plus up to $100 off a connection charge through Tribal Link Up. SafeLink does claim it, with about 139,000 Tribal subscriber-months in 2026 USAC data against roughly 8 million non-Tribal. Say you live on Tribal lands when asked, and use your Tribal ID instead of Social Security digits if you prefer. See our guide to the enhanced Tribal Lifeline benefit.

California. There is an extra step. Since February 1, 2026, California uses the National Verifier for federal Lifeline, while the state program, California LifeLine, keeps its own sign-up. That is two approvals. SafeLink takes part in both, listed in CPUC records as “TracFone Wireless, Inc., dba SafeLink Wireless.” The state discount adds up to $19 a month on top of the federal $9.25, and the California LifeLine Administrator is at 1-877-858-7463, weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific. Our guide to the California LifeLine program covers both.

Texas. Texas runs its own eligibility process instead of the National Verifier route, so a Texas application is checked through the state system. SafeLink does serve Texas, with about 23,800 subscriber-months there in July and August 2026.

Oregon. SafeLink had no Lifeline claims in Oregon in 2026, and the state runs its own process. Apply there and pick a company that serves you.

What arrives, and the first thing to do

Bring-your-own customers get a SIM card, listed at $9.99 on SafeLink’s authorized e-retailer in September 2026. A phone you buy ships to the address on your application. There is no guaranteed SafeLink free cell phone model nationwide, and offers change by ZIP. Our guide to SafeLink free phones explains what the company commits to.

Once it arrives:

  • Activate it. SafeLink runs a text helpline on short code 611611 that covers activation. Our SafeLink activation and BYOP setup guide has the steps.
  • Use the service every 30 days. SafeLink’s own words: “Make a call, send a text or use data (without Wi-Fi) at least once every 30 days.” Wi-Fi does not count, and this is enforced: in Utah alone, SafeLink de-enrolled 1,014 subscribers for non-usage in 2025.
  • Keep the phone on, so monthly benefits can load.
  • Recertify once a year through the National Verifier. The My SafeLink app lists recertifying as a feature.

If you cannot get an answer, SafeLink customer service lists every published number and what each handles.

Survivors of domestic violence

SafeLink’s site carries a Safe Connections Act notice. The law helps survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and related crimes get discounted phone, internet or bundled service.

You can ask a carrier to separate your line from an abuser’s account, and the carrier gives you written confirmation. With that, USAC can provide up to six months of support at $9.25 a month ($34.25 on Tribal lands) while you sort out permanent service. Eligibility is wider here: USAC lists income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, WIC, free or reduced school lunch and Federal Pell Grants, on top of the usual programs.
