SafeLink Activation and BYOP Setup

SafeLink activation takes a few minutes for most people: charge the phone, put the SIM in, power on, follow the prompts. If it will not connect, text SUPPORT to 611611 or call SafeLink technical support at 1-800-378-1684 from another phone.

One fact shapes the rest. SafeLink is the Lifeline brand of TracFone Wireless, Inc., which Verizon owns, and it runs on the Verizon network. A phone you already own has to be Verizon compatible and VoLTE capable or it will not activate. For the version covering every company, read how to activate a free government phone, and for what the service includes see our SafeLink Wireless review.

What arrives, and what to do first

What arrivesWhat it meansFirst thing to do

Nothing yetApproval is still moving, or the order stalledUse “Check your service status” on safelinkwireless.com

Keep the small white card the SIM is punched out of. The long serial number on it is the fastest way to get help later.

One shipping limit: a county agency page listing SafeLink says it will not ship phones to P.O. boxes, shelters or treatment facilities. SafeLink’s own shipping page does not load for outside readers, so confirm it before you order. Not applied yet? See how to apply for SafeLink Wireless.

Activation routes SafeLink offers

SafeLink Wireless activation can go through any of these.

RouteWhere it isBest for
BUY/ACTIVATE Your PhoneTop menu on safelinkwireless.comA SIM or phone in hand, plus internet
My SafeLink appGoogle Play and the App StoreBalance, plans, recertifying, stores
Text 611611Any phone with serviceSIM help, BYOP checks, number transfers
1-800-378-1684SafeLink technical supportAnything stuck, or when you need a person
An authorized retailerText STORE and your ZIP to 611611No home internet, or you want help in person

The 611611 line is SafeLink’s own self-service system, and it publishes its keyword list. The ones that matter here are SIM (install instructions), BYOP (device compatibility), PORTIN (move a number in), TRANSFER (move a number to a new device), APN (data settings), LTE, COVERAGE and SUPPORT.

SafeLink’s help pages are built with JavaScript, so nobody outside the company can quote the exact on-screen wording. Treat the steps below as the shape of the process, not a script.

Activate a new SafeLink phone

safelink activation
  1. Charge the phone to at least half. Setup fails on a low battery.
  2. Check the SIM. On most SafeLink phones it is already in. If it is loose, power off, open the tray, and set the card in with the cut corner matching the tray and the gold contacts down.
  3. Power on and follow the prompts. Many phones activate themselves once they find a signal.
  4. If nothing happens, get on Wi-Fi and open the My SafeLink app, or use BUY/ACTIVATE Your Phone on safelinkwireless.com.
  5. If that stalls, text SUPPORT to 611611, or call 1-800-378-1684 from another phone with the SIM number and IMEI ready.
  6. Test three things: a call, a text, and a web page with Wi-Fi off. All three must work.

SafeLink tells customers to keep the phone switched on so benefits can load. They are pushed to the line each month, and a phone left off can miss them.

SafeLink BYOP: activate a phone you already own

safelink sim card

SafeLink BYOP means bring your own phone. The help center answers both “I already have a wireless phone, can I activate it when I sign up?” and “Will I need to buy a SIM card?”, so this is an official path. Our bring your own phone to Lifeline guide covers the rules at every company. Three things must be true first.

  • It must be unlocked. A phone locked to another carrier will reject a SafeLink SIM. Ask your old company, and read can you unlock a free government phone if they refuse.
  • It must work on Verizon. Text BYOP to 611611 to run SafeLink’s own compatibility check before buying anything.
  • It must support VoLTE. More on that below.

Then:

  1. Text BYOP to 611611, or use BUY/ACTIVATE Your Phone on safelinkwireless.com, and enter your IMEI.
  2. Get a SafeLink SIM. A BYOP SIM Card was listed at $9.99 on SafeLink’s authorized e-retailer shop in September 2026. That shop is run by Quality One Wireless, not SafeLink; order questions go to 1-888-434-8168.
  3. Power off, take out any old SIM, insert the SafeLink SIM, power on.
  4. Activate it on the website, in the app, or by text. Text SIM to 611611 if the card will not seat.

On eSIM, go carefully. SafeLink’s support site carries eSIM pages, including an Apple tutorial for a missed eSIM activation, and its shop sorts phones by nano-SIM, eSIM or both. But it does not publish which BYOP customers get an eSIM instead of a card, so ask on 611611 or at 1-800-378-1684 first.

The serial numbers you will be asked for

Nearly every activation call or form asks for one or two of these.

NumberWhat it identifiesWhere to find it
IMEIThe phone itself, 15 digitsDial *#06#; iPhone Settings, General, About; Android Settings, About phone
SIM number (ICCID)The SIM cardThe plastic card the SIM came on; iPhone Settings, General, About
EIDThe eSIM chip inside the phoneiPhone Settings, General, About. Pixel Settings, About phone, SIM status
Account number and PINYour old carrier account, for a portYour last bill, or the old company’s app

Write the IMEI and SIM number on paper first. Once activation starts, the phone may not show them.

Transfer your number to SafeLink

transfer number to safelink

You can keep your number. SafeLink publishes a “Can I bring my own phone number?” answer and lists PORTIN on 611611. Get these from your current company first:

  • Your account number with that company.
  • The transfer PIN or port-out PIN, often different from the voicemail PIN.
  • The billing name, service address and ZIP exactly as they appear on the account.
  • Your full 10-digit number.

Then the rule that saves the most grief, straight from the FCC: do not terminate service with your old company before starting service with the new one. Cancel first and the number is released, and you may lose it. The FCC says a wireless-to-wireless switch can be usable “within a few hours,” though wrong account details stretch it out.

SafeLink publishes no porting timeframe a reader can check, so treat any exact figure you see online as a guess. Keep the old phone working until the SafeLink line rings. To move a Lifeline benefit between companies, read how to transfer Lifeline to another provider.

Activating a replacement or second phone

If a SafeLink phone is lost, stolen or broken, the service and number move to the new device instead of starting over. SafeLink lists TRANSFER on 611611 for moving a number to a new device, and LOST for reporting one gone. It keeps a replacement FAQ but publishes no fee, no turnaround time and no word on whether a police report is needed, so call 1-800-378-1684 before paying anyone. Ways to reach a person are in our SafeLink customer service guide. The same TRANSFER path works for a phone you bought yourself, and what SafeLink hands out free varies by ZIP, covered in SafeLink free phones.

VoLTE, and why an old phone may not activate

This is the most common reason a good phone will not come to life on SafeLink. Verizon finished decommissioning its 3G and 4G non-VoLTE CDMA network on December 31, 2022. A device that cannot do VoLTE, which Verizon markets as HD Voice, can no longer make or receive calls (including 911 calls), send texts, or use data on that network.

SafeLink went through this with its own customers in 2024, telling affected people their phone and SIM were not VoLTE compatible and offering a free replacement device and SIM.

In practice, a phone sold as 3G only, or one from roughly 2016 or earlier, is unlikely to activate. Verizon says HD Voice is on by default on iPhone 6 and newer and most modern Android phones. Run the BYOP check before spending money on a SIM.

When SafeLink activation fails

ProblemLikely causeWhat to do
“No SIM” or “Invalid SIM”Card not seated, or wrong tray sizePower off, reseat the SIM, power on, wait five minutes
Stuck on SOS or Emergency calls onlyLine not active yet, or no VoLTEFinish activation online or on 611611; text BYOP to 611611
Calls work, internet does notWrong data settingsText APN to 611611, then restart

Activation page loops or errorsApplication not fully approvedUse “Check your service status”, or call 1-800-378-1684
Looks right, still nothingProvisioning has not caught upLeave the phone on; call if it is not clear the next day

SafeLink does not publish how long any of this should take, and no official “allow 24 to 48 hours” statement could be verified in September 2026. So do not panic at hour three, but call 1-800-378-1684 instead of retrying the same failed step all day. SafeLink also offers live chat from its support site.

Make a call or text the same day

Use the phone right away. SafeLink’s own instruction is to “make a call, send a text or use data (without Wi-Fi) at least once every 30 days.” An idle line gets de-enrolled, and that is not theoretical: in Utah alone, TracFone/SafeLink dropped 1,014 subscribers for non-usage across 2025, 61 to 100 people a month. Federal rules give a 15-day notice to cure first. Our Lifeline 30-day usage rule guide explains what counts.

Note “without Wi-Fi.” Data riding your home Wi-Fi does not prove you used the service. Make a real call on the cell network. SafeLink also says you must verify eligibility once a year, through the National Verifier; the My SafeLink app lists that as a feature.

Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling and hotspot

For SafeLink wifi questions, the company lists WIFI on 611611 for setting up and managing Wi-Fi, and HOTSPOT for hotspot use and support. What it does not publish anywhere a reader can check is how much hotspot data your plan includes, or whether Wi-Fi calling is on for your line. Its marketing says offers vary by state, and the home page prints no data figure because the offer is tied to your ZIP.

So it varies by plan and ZIP. Enter your ZIP on safelinkwireless.com, or text PLAN to 611611 once active.

Frequently asked questions

How do I handle SafeLink activation without home internet? Text SUPPORT to 611611 from any working phone, or call 1-800-378-1684. You can also text STORE and your ZIP to 611611 to find a retailer who will do it for you.

Can I activate a SafeLink phone through 611611? SafeLink publishes an FAQ titled “Can I activate my phone through 611611?”, and during its network migration it told customers to text ONESTEP to 611611 to activate a new device and SIM. Confirm the right keyword by texting SUPPORT to 611611.

Will SafeLink work on my iPhone? It can, if the iPhone is unlocked, Verizon compatible and VoLTE capable. SafeLink’s help center covers Apple alongside Samsung, Motorola, LG, Nokia and ZTE. Run the BYOP check on 611611 with your IMEI.

How long does a number transfer to SafeLink take? SafeLink publishes no timeframe. The FCC says a wireless-to-wireless switch may be usable within a few hours. Keep the old line open until the SafeLink phone rings.

Is the My SafeLink app the right one? On Google Play it is published under the package com.safelinkwireless.app and was updated on August 19, 2026. The App Store listing for “My SafeLink” shows a seller name that does not match TracFone or Verizon, and an older update date, so check it before installing on an iPhone.

My phone says SOS only. Is it broken? Usually not. SOS means the phone has power and a radio but no active line. Finish activation, then restart. If it stays on SOS, it may not support VoLTE.
