SNAP for Families With Children 2026

About a third of SNAP households include children, and families get several rules that raise benefits or open other help. Child care costs you pay so you can work or study come off your income with no dollar cap. Child support you pay is deducted too. Parents with a child under 14 at home are exempt from SNAP’s 3-month work time limit. And a SNAP card means your children get free school meals automatically, plus a head start on Summer EBT and WIC.

In fiscal 2024, 7.3 million SNAP households had children, and more than half of them had earnings from work.

Worked example

Tasha is a single mom with a 4-year-old and a 9-year-old. She earns $2,200 a month, pays $300 a month for after-school and preschool care, and pays $1,100 rent. Her state’s utility allowance is $400 (it varies). FY2027 figures:

StepMathResult
Gross earningsUnder the $2,960 limit for 3$2,200
Earned income deduction20% of $2,200 = $440$1,760
Standard deduction$1,760 – $217$1,543
Dependent care$1,543 – $300$1,243
Excess shelter$1,500 – half of $1,243, capped at $769$769
Net income$1,243 – $769$474
Benefit$808 – 30% of $474 (about $143)About $665 a month

Without the child care deduction, her benefit would be about $100 lower (about $563). Keep receipts from your provider.

Free school meals, automatically

snap free school meals

Children in SNAP households are directly certified for free school breakfast and lunch through data matching. You usually don’t need to fill out a school meal form. If the school doesn’t show your child as free-meal eligible, give them your SNAP approval letter.

Many schools now serve free meals to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision, which schools can use when at least 25% of students are “identified,” often through SNAP.

Summer EBT and WIC

  • Summer EBT (SUN Bucks): $120 per school-age child in participating states, and SNAP families are usually enrolled automatically. See Summer EBT 2026.
  • WIC: SNAP makes you income-eligible for WIC for children under 5 and pregnant or new moms. See WIC vs SNAP.

Work rules for parents in 2026

The 2025 budget law narrowed the parent exemption. Before, any child under 18 in the household exempted adults from the time limit. Now it’s under 14.

HouseholdCovered by the time limit?
Parent with a 10-year-oldNo
Parent whose youngest child is 15Yes, if 18 to 64 and not otherwise exempt
Grandparent raising a 12-year-oldNo (the exemption covers a parent or other household member responsible for a child under 14)

Parents of children under 6 are also exempt from general work registration. See SNAP work requirements.
