Assurance Wireless Activation Guide

Assurance Wireless activation takes a few minutes for most people: charge the phone, insert the SIM (or set up the eSIM), power on and follow the prompts. If anything stalls, call Assurance at 1-888-321-5880 from a different phone. The line is open Monday to Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central time.

This guide has Assurance’s steps for each situation: a new phone, a physical SIM, an eSIM, a phone you already own, and moving service to a replacement or upgraded phone. It also covers the problems that stop activation and how to fix them. For the company overview, see our Assurance Wireless review. For activation across all free government phone companies, see how to activate a free government phone.

Before you start: what you need

Most failed activations come down to a missing item or a dead battery. Gather these first:

Activate a new Assurance Wireless phone

assurance wireless activation

These are the steps Assurance gives for a phone that arrived from Assurance or its store.

  1. Charge the phone. Plug it in and wait until it has enough charge for setup.
  2. Power it on. Hold the power button until the welcome screen appears.
  3. Insert the SIM card if it is not already inside. The slot is usually on the side or back. Restart the phone after inserting it.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. Many phones activate on their own at this point.
  5. Call 1-888-321-5880 from another phone if you are prompted to, or if activation stalls.
  6. Test everything. Make a call, send a text and open a web page to confirm data works.

If it still does not activate, Assurance’s advice is to reset the phone and start the process again.

Phones ordered from Assurance’s online store usually arrive within 2 business days, according to Assurance. Orders placed on a Friday evening or weekend, or sent to a P.O. box, can take longer. If your phone has not arrived after 10 days, call customer care.

Activate a physical SIM card

Use these steps for a new SIM in an Assurance phone, a replacement SIM, or a SIM going into a phone you own.

  1. Power the phone off.
  2. Find the SIM tray. It is on the edge of most phones, or under the back cover on some older models. Assurance includes an ejector tool with its orders to open the tray.
  3. Take out any old SIM that is already in the tray.
  4. Insert the Assurance SIM, matching the cut corner to the tray, with the gold contacts facing down.
  5. Power the phone on and wait a few minutes for it to find the network.
  6. Make a test call.

If there is no service, take the SIM out and reseat it, or turn the phone off for 30 seconds and try again. If a replacement SIM will not work, call 1-888-321-5880 from a different phone with the SIM card number ready.

Activate an eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM, so there is no card to insert. You need a phone that supports eSIM and a Wi-Fi connection before you begin. On most phones, a notification appears when your Assurance eSIM is ready. Tap it and follow the prompts. If you miss the notification, use the menu path for your phone:

PhoneMenu path Assurance gives
SamsungSettings, then Connections, then SIM Manager, then Add eSIM, then choose Assurance Wireless and tap Add
Google PixelSettings, then Network and Internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM, then Download your eSIM, then choose Assurance Wireless and tap Activate
MotorolaSettings, then Network and Internet, then SIMs and mobile network, then Download new SIM, then Set up an eSIM, then choose Assurance Wireless, tap Set up and turn Use SIM on
iPhoneSettings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, then Add Cellular Plan
Other Android phonesSettings, then Network and Internet, then Add SIM, then Set up an eSIM, then choose Assurance Wireless, tap Set up and switch the SIM on

Assurance’s eSIM page says to activate within 30 days to keep your service active. After that, use the phone at least once every 30 days (a call, a text or mobile data) so you keep the free benefit.

Activating your own phone with Assurance

You can bring a phone you already own if it is unlocked and works on the T-Mobile network. Assurance’s online checker tells you whether the phone is compatible, but it does not tell you whether it is locked, so confirm that with the carrier you bought it from.

  1. Dial *#06# to get the 15-digit IMEI.
  2. Enter it in the checker on Assurance’s bring-your-own-phone page.
  3. Insert the Assurance SIM, or set up the eSIM over Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the SIM or eSIM steps above.

Our full guide to Assurance Wireless bring your own phone covers compatibility, iPhones and what to do if your phone fails the check.

Keep your current phone number

If you want your old number on Assurance, have this ready from your current carrier before you call:

  • Your account number (on your bill or online account).
  • Your port-out PIN (get it by calling your current carrier).
  • The phone number itself, which must still be active with that carrier.

Back up your contacts, voicemail and texts. Once your Assurance phone or SIM arrives, call 1-888-321-5880 from a different phone to start the transfer. Assurance says you may have service with both carriers for up to 24 hours. Do not cancel your old service until you get a confirmation text.

Moving your number also moves your Lifeline discount. Only one Lifeline discount is allowed per household, so the old carrier’s discount ends once Assurance takes over.

Move service to a replacement or new phone

  1. Log in at myaccount.assurancewireless.com.
  2. Choose Swap/Update Phone.
  3. Enter the new phone’s IMEI (dial *#06# to see it).
  4. Choose “SIM that came with my new phone” if it came with one.
  5. Submit. Assurance says you may need to submit twice, because the new SIM details fill in after the first submission.
  6. Or call 1-888-321-5880 from another phone to do it with an agent. Have the IMEI and SIM card number ready.

Back up photos and contacts before you switch. Phones bought from Assurance’s online store are already compatible.

If you are bringing a phone from another carrier, check compatibility first; see Assurance Wireless bring your own phone. If you are replacing a lost phone, see Assurance Wireless replacement phone.

Logging in to My Account after activation

My Account is where you swap phones, buy a phone and check usage. To log in, enter your phone number and account PIN. Assurance then texts a six-digit code, which you type in to reach your dashboard.

Your PIN must be six digits with no spaces or symbols. If you forget it, choose “Forgot Account PIN?” on the login screen, answer your security question and Assurance texts you the PIN.

Free phones with activation: what Assurance actually gives

People often search for free phones with activation, or a free iPhone with activation. Here is how it works at Assurance today:

  • California: eligible California LifeLine customers can get a phone at no cost. Assurance names the vendors as American Network Solutions and Enidus USA.
  • Other states: Assurance’s plan pages list “bring your own phone or low-cost device.” You activate a phone you own, or buy one.
  • iPhones: Assurance’s store, run by Quality One Wireless, sells iPhones (for example, the iPhone SE 3rd generation listed at $209 and the iPhone 11 at $229 in September 2026). You can also activate an unlocked, compatible iPhone you already own with an eSIM or SIM.

There is no activation fee listed for the free plan. For models and prices, see Assurance Wireless phones and prices.

After you activate

Your free Lifeline plan starts once the phone is active. In most states that is 10 GB of high-speed data with unlimited talk and text. In California and on Tribal lands it is 12 GB. Hotspot works within your data if the phone supports it. Once you use up the data, speeds drop to about 600 kbps until the next cycle, with no extra charge.

Two rules keep the service free:

  • Use it every 30 days. A call, text or data session counts. See the Lifeline 30-day usage rule.
  • Renew once a year. In most states USAC contacts you; in California it is the California LifeLine Administrator; in Texas it is the Texas LIDA.
