Free Government iPhone XR: What to Know

A free government iPhone XR does not exist in September 2026, but two Lifeline shops sell one. On September 21, 2026, AirTalk Wireless showed an iPhone XR at $84.99, with a $178.25 retail price crossed out and the line “Sorry, this product is currently out of stock.” TruConnect listed one the same day at $249.00, with a live Add to cart button.

The cheap one is empty and the stocked one costs three times as much. The better question is whether an XR is worth buying at all, because this model sits on the line Apple drew when it stopped shipping new iOS versions to old hardware. The XR is on the good side of it. The iPhone 8 is not.

Neither price is free. Both are copays on top of a Lifeline plan that already costs $0 a month.

TruConnect’s page gives real detail: 64GB or 128GB, six colors, and a choice of “New” or “Pre-Owned” graded “R2/Ready for resale, tested for Key Functions.” It lists a warranty of “1 Year.” But TruConnect’s returns page gives new devices a one-year manufacturer warranty and refurbished ones only “a 60-day warranty from the original date of sale.” Ask which you are buying before you pay.

AirTalk’s $84.99 is the tempting number and the empty one. Its site says service “is not available in all states/areas and may vary by state,” and AirTalk will not release its phones for other networks. Its own guide admits the XR “may not always be available for free.” More in our guide to the AirTalk Wireless free iPhone and our Lifeline iPhone price list.

Why the XR is the last old iPhone still worth owning

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, and it runs on the iPhone 11 and newer. The XR and XS did not make the cut, so iOS 18 is as far as they go.

Missing the cut is not the same as being dropped. Apple shipped iOS 18.7.10 on August 17, 2026, and its security notes list the devices covered: “iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPad 7th generation.” That patch was five weeks old when this was checked.

The phone one step down got no such thing. The last update for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X was iOS 16.7.16 on May 11, 2026, and the iPhone 7 and 6s got iOS 15.8.8 that same day. Nothing since.

How much longer does the XR have? Apple publishes no end date, so nobody can promise one. Pattern is the only guide. Apple patched iOS 16 for about two and a half years after it stopped being current, and iOS 15 for nearly four. iOS 18 stopped being current in September 2025. On that history an XR plausibly gets fixes into 2028, but “not guaranteed” is the honest phrasing.

XR, iPhone 8, or a cheap new Android?

Read the security rows again. That $129 new Android runs out of patches on January 31, 2027, about four months away, and has no 5G either. The 2018 XR has the longer runway.

The verdict splits by price. A used XR at $85 to $120 beats a used iPhone 8 at $61 to $67: the extra $25 to $50 buys a phone still being patched, a bigger screen and Face ID. Buy that from Swappa or a refurbisher, not a Lifeline shop.

TruConnect’s $249 XR is the one to think twice about. The Galaxy A16 5G sits on the same shelf at the same $249, brand new, with 5G and six years of Samsung updates running to 2030. Paying $249 for a 2018 phone with no OS upgrades left makes sense only if you need iPhone apps or iMessage. Our iPhone 8 guide covers the cheaper end.

What the iPhone XR actually is

Apple sold the XR from October 26, 2018 until September 14, 2021, starting at $749. About 77.4 million shipped by late 2020, which is why used ones are everywhere and cheap.

Apple’s specs list a 6.1-inch LCD at 1792 by 828 pixels, an A12 Bionic chip, one 12MP rear camera, Face ID with no home button, IP67 water resistance and a Lightning port. Apple rated it at 16 hours of video playback, so a healthy XR still gets through a day. The single camera means no ultra-wide and no Night mode, so dim rooms look worse than on an iPhone 11. There is no 5G, which on a Lifeline plan rarely matters, because your data runs out long before speed does. One quiet plus: the XR takes a nano-SIM and an eSIM, so providers that activate by eSIM can start it without mailing a card.

Bringing an iPhone XR you already own

If an XR sits in a drawer, this is the fastest route to a free government iPhone XR, and it skips both the stock problem and the $249.

  1. Check eligibility. Lifeline takes income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or enrollment in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or a Veterans or Survivors Pension. Our Lifeline eligibility guide has the 2026 income table.
  2. Check the carrier lock. Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock. You want “No SIM restrictions.” If it names a carrier, that carrier must release the phone first. See our guide on freeing a locked government phone.
  3. Apply through the National Verifier, then pick a provider that serves your ZIP. Steps are in our Lifeline application guide.
  4. Get the SIM. SafeLink’s authorized shop sells a BYOP SIM kit for $9.99, and other providers mail one free. See our bring your own phone guide.

Either way the benefit is the same: up to $9.25 a month off internet or bundled service, up to $34.25 on Tribal lands, one per household.

How to check a used iPhone XR before you pay

check used iphone xr

Apple publishes a checklist for buying a preowned iPhone. Follow it line by line.

  • Activation Lock is the deal breaker. Apple’s wording is blunt: “If the iPhone is Activation Locked, don’t buy it.” If the screen says “iPhone Locked to Owner,” walk away.
  • Battery health. Settings, Battery, Battery Health. Maximum Capacity is the number that matters, and under about 80% means budgeting for a new battery soon.
  • Parts history and Carrier Lock. Both sit in Settings, General, About. Apple lists replaced parts there, and you want “No SIM restrictions.”
  • Physical and stolen checks. Apple says to check the display for scratches, the sides and back for dents, and the Lightning connector for debris. Test buttons, camera, speakers and microphone. Then run the IMEI (dial *#06#) at stolenphonechecker.org, a free CTIA service.

Back Market costs more, around $156 for a 64GB XR, but adds a one-year warranty and 30-day returns. On a phone this old, that gap is often worth paying.

The US Cellular iPhone XR offers people still search for

Searches for “free iphone xr us cellular” and “us cellular free iphone xr” stay steady, and they point at promotions that no longer exist. Those were switch-and-save carrier deals with a line attached, not a government program.

There is also no US Cellular to switch to in the old sense. T-Mobile closed its roughly $4.3 billion purchase of substantially all of UScellular’s wireless operations, customers, stores and select spectrum on August 1, 2025, and said the brand would fold into T-Mobile over about two years. Its business page says that since May 1, 2026, changes such as adding a line or upgrading a device “must now be completed under the T-Mobile brand.” A free iphone xr us cellular offer today is a page nobody took down.

Offers to walk away from

The phrase “free iphone xr government phone” attracts a lot of junk. Red flags:

  • Any site wanting a payment, gift card or “shipping fee” to release a free government phone.
  • Anyone asking for your EBT card PIN. No program needs it, ever.
  • Survey or spin-the-wheel pages promising an iPhone XR for completing offers.
  • Sites taking your Social Security number outside the official application flow.

Apply at getinternet.gov or directly with a provider, never through a link in a text. Our free government phone scams guide has the longer list, and the main free government iPhone page covers which models turn up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a free government iPhone XR? Not at $0. Two Lifeline shops sell one: TruConnect at $249.00 on September 21, 2026, and AirTalk Wireless at $84.99 but out of stock that day. Lifeline never promises a specific model.

How to get a free iPhone XR as cheaply as possible? Qualify for Lifeline through the National Verifier, then watch AirTalk’s XR page for stock at $84.99. If it stays empty, a used one on Swappa starts near $83, well under TruConnect’s $249.

Is an iPhone XR still safe to use in 2026? Yes, with a caveat. It cannot run iOS 27, but Apple issued an iOS 18 security update for it on August 17, 2026. The iPhone 8 and 7 got nothing after May 11, 2026.

Will an iPhone XR work on 5G? No. Apple’s specs list LTE only. At TruConnect the Galaxy A16 5G costs the same $249 and does have 5G.

Can I buy an iPhone XR unlocked instead? Yes, and it is usually the better move. An iphone xr unlocked on Swappa started at $115 on September 20, 2026, against $83 carrier-locked. The extra buys the freedom to move it between Lifeline providers later.
