TruConnect will unlock a phone it gave you or sold you once that device has been active for at least 365 days, and its policy names no fee. You ask by calling 800-430-0443 or emailing [email protected], and the company says it confirms eligibility within two business days. One warning is worth reading twice: you get five tries at the unlock code, and a fifth wrong entry locks the SIM slot permanently.
The harder questions come after that: what is covered when a phone breaks, what a replacement costs, and what happens to your benefit while you wait. TruConnect publishes firm rules for devices bought from its shop and almost nothing about the free phone that comes with service, so this page keeps the two apart. Every policy below was read on TruConnect’s own pages in September 2026.
The TruConnect unlock rule: 365 days of active service
TruConnect’s device unlocking policy sets four conditions, and all have to be true at once:
- The device “must have been active for at least 365 days after initial activation with TruConnect.”
- It came from TruConnect or an authorized agent. A company only unlocks phones it locked.
- It “must not be reported as lost, stolen or otherwise flagged as ineligible.”
- The account must be in good standing.
Deployed military personnel in good standing are the one exception, unlocked right away with deployment papers.
To ask, call 800-430-0443 or email [email protected]. Have your phone number, account details and the IMEI ready; dial *#06# for the IMEI. TruConnect says it confirms eligibility within two business days.
Then slow down. Its policy states: “You have only 5 attempts to unlock the device. If you enter an incorrect code 5 times, the SIM slot will be permanently locked and cannot be unlocked.” No agent can reverse that, so copy the code from the email or text rather than retyping it.
Why unlocking matters when you switch companies
A locked phone still works on TruConnect. It just rejects any other carrier’s SIM, usually with “SIM not supported.” That matters the day you leave, because a new Lifeline company sends its own SIM and a locked handset will not take it. Our guide on how to transfer Lifeline to another provider covers the switch. Request the unlock first, while the account is open and in good standing.
The 365-day wait is normal here. The wireless industry code most prepaid and Lifeline companies follow says carriers will unlock prepaid devices no later than one year after activation. The FCC proposed a 60-day rule in 2024; as of September 2026 it has not been adopted, and in January 2026 the FCC granted Verizon a waiver from its own 60-day condition. Unlocking is legal for the device owner under 37 CFR 201.40, though that does not force a carrier to act early. Our guide on whether you can unlock a free government phone sets TruConnect’s policy beside those at Assurance Wireless, Access Wireless, Life Wireless and enTouch.
Unlocking also cannot add network support a phone never had, so check the IMEI on the new carrier’s compatibility checker first. See bring your own phone to Lifeline.
TruConnect warranty and return terms
These terms, published in September 2026, cover devices bought at shop.truconnect.com. A new device carries a “one-year manufacturer warranty from the original date of sale”; a refurbished device carries a “60-day warranty from the original date of sale.” Both clocks start at the sale, not at delivery.
What is covered is narrow: “software-related issues, camera defects, unresponsive keys, dead pixels, etc.” What is excluded is broad: “diminishing battery life, scratches, accidental damages, coverage issues, or software incompatibility/problems with 3rd-party apps.” Visible physical damage such as liquid damage, a cracked LCD or damaged housing voids the warranty outright. Measured against how phones actually die, that leaves a lot out. This warranty is aimed at a factory fault.
| Policy | What TruConnect publishes | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Unlock eligibility | Active 365 days, from TruConnect, not reported lost or stolen, account in good standing | 365 days |
| Unlock processing | TruConnect confirms the device is eligible | 2 business days |
| Unlock code attempts | A fifth wrong code permanently locks the SIM slot | 5 attempts |
| New device warranty | Manufacturer warranty from the date of sale | 1 year |
| Refurbished device warranty | Warranty from the date of sale | 60 days |
| Damage or wrong item on arrival | “Claims for damage, delivery discrepancy etc.” | 48 hours |
| Return of a working device | Refund on non-defective goods | 7 days |
| Restocking fee | 20 percent like-new, 25 to 50 percent if not | Applied to the refund |
| Shipping and handling on a refund | Minimum $9.99, non-refundable | Every refund |
Two deadlines settle most return questions. Report damage or a wrong item within 48 hours of delivery, so open the box the day it arrives. A working device you no longer want goes back within 7 days, minus a 20 percent restocking fee and a minimum $9.99 shipping and handling charge TruConnect states is non-refundable.
On a real price: the Galaxy A15 5G is listed at $199.00. Returned like-new inside 7 days, the 20 percent fee is $39.80 plus at least $9.99, so about $149 comes back. Missing accessories cost extra, from $3.00 for a cable or manual to $10.00 for a battery.
Returns run through an RMA. Sign in, open order history, click “Return”, complete the form and submit. The RMA number arrives by email “usually within 24 business hours.” Ship nothing before it does.
Problem and fix, by situation
Device orders and deliveries go to Q1 on 1-888-434-5890. Service and account questions go to TruConnect on 800-430-0443.
The phone arrived broken
- Photograph the box and the device first.
- Report it within 48 hours of delivery, the stated window for damage claims.
- Open a return in order history to get an RMA number.
- Keep all packaging and accessories; missing items cost $3.00 to $10.00 each.
The phone broke later, inside the warranty
- Check the date of sale, not delivery: one year new, 60 days refurbished.
- Match the fault to the covered list: software faults, camera defects, dead keys and dead pixels are in; battery decline, scratches and accidental damage are out.
- Check for visible physical damage, which voids the warranty.
- If it qualifies, start the RMA and wait for the number.
The phone broke outside the warranty
TruConnect publishes no repair program, so a broken TruConnect phone outside warranty means buying another device from the shop, moving your SIM into a phone you already own, or checking whether another Lifeline company gives new customers a device. A used phone works only if it is unlocked and compatible, so check its IMEI at stolenphonechecker.org before paying a stranger.
The phone is lost or stolen
- Call 800-430-0443 from any phone and report it, so nobody else uses your line.
- Lock or erase it remotely with Find Hub on Android or Find My on iPhone, while it is still powered on.
- File a police report if it was stolen, then change passwords for email, banking and benefit portals used on that phone.
- Ask TruConnect to flag the IMEI. A phone reported lost or stolen is also barred from being unlocked later.
- Ask what a replacement costs and what your deadline is. TruConnect’s terms only address billing, warning that “you are still required to pay all charges until the dispute is resolved.” Our guide to a lost or stolen Lifeline phone replacement has what other companies charge.
The phone works but the service does not
A TruConnect phone not working is usually not a hardware fault. No calls, no data, “no SIM” or “emergency calls only” all point at service. Restart the phone, reseat the SIM, check the APN and confirm the account is active before spending money. The fixes in free government phone not working solve most of these. A device sent back as defective when the fault was service counts as a non-defective return, fee attached.
You want to leave TruConnect and keep the phone
Request the unlock first, while the account is open and in good standing, then start the transfer. The other order risks failing that condition.
| What happened | First move | Deadline that matters | Who to call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damaged or wrong item on arrival | Photos, then a damage claim | 48 hours | Q1, 1-888-434-5890 |
| Changed your mind, device works | Start an RMA from order history | 7 days | Q1, 1-888-434-5890 |
| Camera, keys, pixels or software fault | Check date of sale, then RMA | 1 year, or 60 days | Q1, 1-888-434-5890 |
| Cracked screen, water damage, dead battery | Not covered; price a replacement | None | Shop, then 800-430-0443 |
| Phone lost or stolen | Report the line, lock the device | Ask for your window | TruConnect, 800-430-0443 |
| Phone fine, service dead | Restart, reseat SIM, check account | 30-day usage rule | TruConnect, 800-430-0443 |
| Leaving for another company | Request the unlock first | 365 days active | [email protected] |
What a replacement actually costs
When the warranty does not apply, you are buying. TruConnect’s shop listed twelve models in September 2026, from $129.00 for a Motorola G Play (2024) to $449.00 for a Galaxy S23 FE, with the Galaxy A14 5G at $149.00 and the iPhone SE (3rd Gen) from $249.00 in between.
Those are purchase prices, not Lifeline offers, and one day’s snapshot. Stock and prices change, and what TruConnect shows you can depend on your ZIP code, so check the shop before planning around any figure here. What arrives free at sign-up is a separate question, covered in our guide to the TruConnect free phone.
Keeping your number and your benefit while the phone is gone
Your number belongs to your account, not the handset, so TruConnect moves it onto the new SIM when you activate a replacement. Losing the phone does not cancel your Lifeline benefit either.
Silence can. The federal rule requires you to use the service at least once every 30 days on a free plan. Miss it and you get a 15-day notice, and if you still do not use the service you are de-enrolled. Our explainer on the Lifeline 30-day usage rule lists what counts. So if a replacement takes three weeks, make a call the hour you turn it on.
Your yearly renewal does not pause. TruConnect says you get a 60-day window, and that missing it means USAC de-enrolls you 5 business days after the window closes. If that date lands while you are without a phone, renew at my.truconnect.com from a computer. See how to recertify Lifeline.
What TruConnect does not publish
As of September 2026, TruConnect does not publish:
- Any fee or process for replacing a free Lifeline phone. A support article titled “Device Replacement Policy” exists on its help site but is not readable in full.
- Warranty terms for a free Lifeline device. The one-year and 60-day warranties cover shop purchases.
- A deadline for replacing a lost phone before the line is affected. Some companies publish 45 days; TruConnect does not.
- Any device insurance, protection plan or free upgrade path. The only documented route to a different phone is buying one.
Do not let a blog fill those blanks with a number. Call 800-430-0443 and ask, then write down the date, the agent’s name and the answer. TruConnect’s contact page gives hours of Monday to Saturday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific. Our TruConnect customer service and account guide has the other numbers and how to escalate.
