The iPhone 7 is the one Apple phone a Lifeline company still files under “free,” and on September 21, 2026 you could not get it. AirTalk Wireless lists the iPhone 7 on its Free Phones page, but that day the tile read “Out Of Stock,” and the only phone on the page printing an actual $0 price was an Android, the A67L Gen2.
A free phone you cannot order is not an offer. So the real question is what to do when the page says yes and the warehouse says no, and whether a 2016 phone is worth waiting for at all.
Who lists a free government iPhone 7, and at what price
Prices read September 21, 2026 with no ZIP entered. Yours can differ, because AirTalk sets device offers by state and local stock.
| Provider | iPhone 7 | iPhone 7 Plus | Stock that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirTalk Wireless | On the Free Phones page, price shown as “Varies by region” | $19.99, retail struck through at $86.25 | iPhone 7 “Out Of Stock”; 7 Plus orderable |
| SafeLink Wireless | Not listed at any price | Not listed | Not applicable |
| TruConnect | Not listed at any price | Not listed | Not applicable |
| Assurance Wireless | Not listed | Not listed | Not applicable |
One company in the Lifeline market carries this model at all. SafeLink’s authorized shop, run by Quality One Wireless, starts its Apple range at the iPhone SE 3rd generation from $249. TruConnect’s starts at the iPhone XR at $249. Assurance Wireless lists one Apple phone, the iPhone SE at $129.99. None of the three sells a 7 or a 7 Plus in any condition, so a free iphone 7 government phone means AirTalk and nothing else.
How AirTalk’s free catalogue works
AirTalk runs three separate shelves, and the 7 and the 7 Plus sit on different ones. That explains most of the confusion in search results. The Free Phones page is the $0 shelf. It carried twelve models that day.
| On the Free Phones page | Price shown | Stock |
|---|---|---|
| A67L Gen2 | “Get A67L Gen2 For Only $0” | In stock, selectable |
| Hotpepper Verde | “Varies by region” | In stock, selectable |
| Apple iPhone 7 | “Varies by region” (retail $80.50) | Out Of Stock |
| Apple iPhone 6 Plus | “Varies by region” (retail $90) | Out Of Stock |
| Eight Samsung, Unimax, TCL, Blu and Moxee models | Retail $49.99 to $120 | Out Of Stock |
Ten of twelve were unavailable, and only one printed a real $0 price. The page also carries a line people miss: “Free phone is available for new and eligible former customers only.” If you already have AirTalk service, the free shelf is not yours.
The second shelf is the upgrade listing, for existing customers. That is where the iPhone 7 Plus showed $19.99, and no standalone iPhone 7 appeared on it at all. The third shelf is the paid catalogue, topping out at the iPhone 13.
AirTalk publishes no restock dates, and its own articles lag the store. Its iPhone 7 article, updated July 31, 2026, says only that “availability may vary based on inventory levels, active promotions, and what’s offered in your state.” The 7 Plus article, updated May 14, 2026, still calls that phone free. Trust the product tile, not the blog post. Our AirTalk free iPhone guide lists every Apple model AirTalk has shown.
The 7 Plus at $19.99 is the offer most people can take
Searches for a free iphone 7 plus government phone land on that $19.99 listing. It is not free, and it is not a scam either. It is a copay on a used phone from a company that has already approved you for $0 service.
- It is an upgrade-shelf price, aimed at existing customers, so it may not appear during a first application.
- The device may be refurbished. AirTalk says each one is “either brand new or a carefully refurbished model.” It does not say which you get.
- The warranty is short. Fifteen days on a free pre-owned device, 30 days on a paid one, and non-defective returns go back within 7 calendar days at your expense.
- It stays locked forever. AirTalk’s terms say it “does not provide unlocking services for any Devices obtained through our Service.” Lifeline lets you change companies, and this handset will not come with you. See our guide to unlocking a free government phone.
For a phone you plan to use for a year, $19.99 is a fair trade. As a phone you keep, it is not.
The iPhone 7 in 2026: what you are really being handed
Apple released the iPhone 7 on September 16, 2016 and stopped selling it in September 2019. Any unit shipping now is about ten years old.
| What matters | iPhone 7 and 7 Plus | Why you should care |
|---|---|---|
| Software ceiling | iOS 15, newest build 15.8.8 from May 11, 2026 | Still patched, but frozen twelve versions behind |
| Current iOS | iOS 27 shipped September 14, 2026 for iPhone 11 and newer | New features and many new apps skip this phone |
| Network | 4G LTE only, no 5G, with VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling | It still activates and still makes calls today |
| SIM | Nano-SIM only, no eSIM | You need a physical SIM mailed to you |
| Port | Lightning, IP67 water resistance | Old cables, while cheap chargers are now USB-C |
| Headphone jack | None. This is the model that removed it | A speaker grille sits where the jack used to be |
| Repairs | On Apple’s vintage list | Service depends on whatever parts are left |
Security updates have not stopped, but the software has. People repeat that the iPhone 7 gets nothing, and that is wrong. Apple shipped iOS 15.8.8 on May 11, 2026 for the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7 family and a few other old devices. What the phone cannot do is move past iOS 15, and app makers keep raising their floors. WhatsApp needs iOS 15.5 from November 30, up from 15.1, which the iPhone 7 can still reach. It will not clear every future cut, so update it the day it arrives.
There is no headphone jack. This trips people up, because the 6s and the 6 Plus have one and the 7 does not. Apple dropped the 3.5 mm jack with this exact model and put Lightning EarPods in the box instead. It stopped including the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter with new iPhones in September 2018, so a used 7 may arrive without one. If wired headphones are your reason for wanting this phone, you want the iPhone 6 Plus on the same free page.
Both models also sit on Apple’s vintage list, which covers products it stopped distributing more than five and less than seven years ago. Repairs depend on whatever parts remain.
What to do while the free iPhone 7 is out of stock
Approval and inventory are separate systems. You can be approved for Lifeline and still be told the phone is gone, and waiting empty-handed costs you months of service.
| Option | What it costs | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Take the free Android now | $0 | Speed and camera quality, not service |
| Use a phone you already own | $0 to $9.99 for a SIM kit | Nothing, if it is unlocked and GSM |
| Pay $19.99 for the 7 Plus | $19.99 | A locked, used, ten-year-old phone |
| Buy a refurbished newer iPhone | Whatever you pay | Cash now, but you own it unlocked |
| Wait for an iPhone 7 restock | $0 and unknown weeks | Your service, for as long as you wait |
Take the free Android. That sounds like a consolation prize, and it is, but the benefit is the service, not the handset. Lifeline pays up to $9.25 a month toward service and never pays for hardware. Approval carries, so you can move a better phone onto the same free plan later without reapplying.
Bringing your own phone is the strongest move if one is sitting in a drawer. AirTalk asks that it be GSM-compatible and not locked to another carrier, and runs an IMEI checker on its site. SafeLink sells a BYOP SIM kit for $9.99. Our bring your own phone to Lifeline guide walks through the check.
How to get a free iPhone 7, step by step
- Confirm you qualify. Income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or someone in the home gets SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or a Veterans or Survivors Pension. Our Lifeline eligibility guide has the income table.
- Enter your ZIP on AirTalk’s site first. It decides which devices and prices you see. If the iPhone 7 tile says out of stock, it is out of stock for you.
- Gather three documents. Proof of identity, address and program participation. Phone photos are fine, and missing paperwork is the usual reason an application stalls.
- Pick the device inside the application. No later screen swaps a free Android for an iPhone at no cost.
- Watch the clock. AirTalk reviews most applications in 1 to 2 business days, ships in 3 to 7, and standard delivery runs 7 to 10 business days.
- Test it the week it lands. Calls, both cameras, the speaker, the Lightning port, and Battery Health for Maximum Capacity. Your warranty window may be only 15 days.
- Use the service at least once every 30 days, or you can be de-enrolled, and recertify once a year. Our how to apply for Lifeline guide covers both.
Offers that are not government programs
“Free iphone 7 us cellular” is still a common search, and it points at an old carrier switcher promotion: a new line, a trade-in, and 24 or 36 months of bill credits you forfeit if you leave early. UScellular is not even a separate wireless company any more. T-Mobile closed its purchase of UScellular’s wireless customers, stores and spectrum on August 1, 2025.
Treat a page as an ad, not information, if it does any of these:
- Calls the iPhone 7 free with no date, no ZIP warning and no word on stock.
- Runs a countdown, a prize wheel, or a claim form that is not on the provider’s own domain.
- Asks for a fee, a card number, a full Social Security number or an EBT PIN.
- Promises an iPhone 7 plus free phone from SafeLink, TruConnect or Assurance, none of which list the model.
Eligibility checks happen at getinternet.gov or by calling the Lifeline Support Center at 1-800-234-9473. Device offers live on the provider’s own site. Our free government phone scams guide covers the rest, and the SafeLink free phones page shows what that company gives away.
Frequently asked questions
Is a free government iPhone 7 real? It is listed, which is not the same as available. On September 21, 2026 AirTalk carried it on its Free Phones page with no $0 price on the tile and an “Out Of Stock” label. No other Lifeline provider lists the model at any price.
How do I get a free iPhone 7 if it is out of stock? You cannot, and nobody can move you up a queue. Enroll anyway, take the free Android or bring your own phone, then upgrade later. The $0 service is the part that matters.
What about a free iPhone 7 Plus? AirTalk showed the 7 Plus at $19.99 on its upgrade listing that day, retail struck through at $86.25. That is a copay for existing customers, not a free phone.
Does the iPhone 7 still get security updates? Yes, occasionally. Apple released iOS 15.8.8 on May 11, 2026 for the iPhone 7 and a few other old devices. It cannot run iOS 16 or anything newer, and iOS 27 arrived September 14, 2026 for the iPhone 11 and up.
Does the iPhone 7 have a headphone jack? No. This is the model where Apple removed it. Lightning EarPods came in the box, and Apple stopped including the 3.5 mm adapter with new iPhones in September 2018, so a used unit may not have one.
Will an iPhone 7 still work on today’s networks? Yes. It supports 4G LTE with VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling, which is what carriers need after the 3G shutdowns. It has no 5G and takes a nano-SIM, not an eSIM.
Can I unlock a free iPhone 7 from AirTalk? No. Its terms say it does not provide unlocking services for any device obtained through its service, so the handset stays behind if you transfer your benefit.
Is an iPhone 7 better than the free Android? For a phone you keep three years, usually not. A ten-year-old handset stuck on iOS 15 loses app support before a current budget Android does. Compare it against the newer models on our free government iPhone guide and the free government iPhone 8 page before you wait out a restock.
